Chapter Fifteen

Cora

The following day Cora floated through her assignments. All she could think about was coming home to Dev at night and listening to more stories about his life. But then she had to keep reminding herself that he was always there with her, even during the day. She could still feel him watching her from somewhere. And her body hummed with the memory of his touch. Actual tingles reverberating across her skin, between her legs, and everywhere else. He’d said to tell him if it was all too much. It was indeed too much for her; he was too much for a human, but never too much for her. She would have him entirely or die trying.

Cora moved through her summer school shift that morning as if in some kind of dream. When she finished her last session of the morning, she rushed back home, hoping to catch sight of him in the daylight.

She waited, as if waiting for signs of a ghost in a haunted house, but he did not respond.

“Are you here? I miss you already. Let me see you,” she begged.

No response. She went to the bookcase and picked up the locket, which she’d set on top of Jake’s book.

“If you don’t answer me, I’m going back out there. To the festival, with all the creeps, weirdos, and probably demons.”

The delicate chain just fit around her neck, allowing her to work the discolored clasp—still, no response.

So, Cora headed out, spending the rest of her day buying new trinkets and tee-shirts from the bazaar on Main Street, then eating up her afternoon at the old movie theater showing a series of paranormal documentaries.

It wasn’t until she walked home in the dark that she could feel him nearby.

“I know you’re here,” she said when she arrived home, lighting her fireplace on that unseasonably chilly summer evening.

“If I’m going to watch you twenty-four-seven, I have to watch from a distance, from places where people can’t see me. Cloaking saps my energy. You’d be surprised how often people don’t pay attention to what’s above them in the sky. Or what their brain denies when they do look up.”

She paced around, searching for the source of his voice until realizing what was happening. “You’re doing that telepathy thing again. But you’re cloaking yourself now; doesn’t that suck up your energy?”

“No. I’m outside. Watching for demons. I’ll be inside after nightfall. Now be a good girl and wait for me instead of asking so many questions.”

“But people can see you outside if you’re not camouflaging yourself.”

“People see what they want to see in the trees. If they stop to notice the birds have stopped singing and look closely, they could see my eyes in the dark. Humans would take note of the strange sense of calm being pressed into their minds. And tomorrow, everyone would be talking about another Bigfoot sighting. ‘The Giant of Bell Mountain is back.’ Just giving the people what they want.”

Waiting for dark tortured her.

Cora was almost asleep when she felt the movement on the bed and heard the squeak of the bedsprings.
